Definition : A description is a set of characteristics by which someone or something can be recognised. We can describe people, places, events, situations, things etc.

Describing People : While describing people we take care of the following points

Height tall, short, medium height

Build thin, underweight, plump, strong, sturdy, fat, overweight

Hair long, short, curly, black, brown, grey

Eyes dark, brown, big, small

Complexion dark, fair, wheatish, pale

Describing Places : While describing a place the following points should be taken into consideration

Name of the place

Location and History

What does it look like (size, appearance, atmosphere)

What is special about the place

Describing Events :While describing an event, the following points should be taken into consideration

Name of the event

When and where did it happen

What happened (Give details)

Who were the people involved

Simple Descriptions

Place - Chandigarh : The City Beautiful : - When a lot of roads criss - cross each other at right angles and the spaces in between are dotted with similar looking, red-bricked, block like houses you get a city called Chandigarh, where mostley of people from different cultures live and work. It is beautiful thanks mainly to its town planning. We can also mention about Sector 17 shopping area, rock garden, rose garden etc. As for the visitors, it leaves them awe-struck.

Person - Meet My Dad : - If you come across someone resembling Abraham Lincoln, the chances are you are face to face with my father. He is so tall and has a thin longish face with a bushy beard and moustache. He is as hardworking and honest as the famous President of the USA was. He may be very soft-spoken but, watch out, he is very firm, almost rigid at times.

Thing - The Mobile Phone : - The mobile phone has revolutionised the way people communicate. In India there are over 600 milion mobile phone users, more than the landline phone owners. The chief reason of the popularity of this handy and lightweight, wireless device is that it is phone, the internet, paging, camera, music system, remote, TV, media player - all rolled into one.

Event - Painting Workshop For School Kids : - St Thomas School recently conducted a two day painting workshop in the Atmosphere Art Gallery. More than 75 school students aged 11-17 took part in it. On day one, they were taught on a drawing sheet and then showed them how to locate any images - birds, animals, people, landcapes in them. The students were awarded merit certificates for their participation.
